The Vine is a mixed-use condominium development at 2228–2288 West Broadway, at the corner of Vine Street in Vancouver’s Kitsilano neighbourhood. Its 133 homes sit above street-level shops, including London Drugs. The location puts everyday errands within walking distance, with West Broadway’s cafés and restaurants, Connaught Park and the Arbutus Greenway nearby.
Building history and architecture
The Vine occupies the former site of an ICBC claims centre. When the redevelopment first went before Vancouver’s Urban Design Panel in 2003, it fell one vote short of support. The architects, Hancock Bruckner Eng & Wright, returned in 2004 with a design that divided the residential portion into three distinct sections and gave the Broadway storefronts a more varied frontage. The revised design earned unanimous support from the voting panel members.
The developer
McLean Courtenay Development Associates developed The Vine in the late 2000s. The project was part of a broader shift around Broadway and Arbutus, as former commercial and industrial sites made way for housing and neighbourhood shops. At The Vine, that change took a particularly visible form. A one-storey claims centre gave way to a mid-rise with homes above the kinds of shops residents use every day.
